Slide the Shakes

Top: Chocolate Milkshake; Middle: Bowl of Ice Cream; Bottom: Chocolate Avocado Twist

WARNING: HIGHLY ADDICTIVE!!! Slide the Shakes is a game where you avoid different obstacles to slide the milkshake into the green zone. The game also gives you recipes so that you can make the interesting beverages that you play with. Some of the these include Cherry Toppers, Jam Donut Shakes, and Bowls of Ice Cream. You may think that Slide the Shakes is easy in the beginning, but other times you may want to throw your phone down in rage!

Not only are there delicious drinks fun to make and slide, but the way that they draw the backgrounds and shakes and pair the colors is beautiful. If you look at the Chocolate Avocado Shake, the background, I think, is stunning. Some of the backdrops are animated and others are not. I do find that whenever I switch over to another app, it loses my progress on the level, which I find very annoying. Slide the Shakes gets a rating of four stars.

Chrome Dinosaur Game

Yasss Chrome!!! You finally have a purpose!!!!!!! If you are offline and on Google Chrome, a dinosaur and a message saying that you are not connected will pop up. If you hit the space bar, the game will commence. You must hit the up and down arrow keys to duck flying pterodactyls and to jump over prickly cacti.

Chrome, I now love this game for two reasons. One is that it is so fun! Two is that this is actually pretty smart. If you are offline and there is no Wifi, then you gave the person something to do. Well played Google Chrome, well played. The game gets four and a half stars.

Crossy Road

Ah. The simple yet addictive game of Crossy Road. Simple name, simple design, simply fun.

Crossy Road is a game where you cross the road while collecting coins. Once you get to one hundred coins, you go to the prize machine to receive a character. If you do something special with the character that is required, you will receive a special character, one that you cannot get from the prize machine. Crossy Road’s world is made of small cubes. Crossy Road has won Apple’s Design Award, and I agree with the results. Many people like this game and think it is addictive and that sometimes less is more, but other people think it is a bit boring, doing the same thing over and over. I asked my friend what she thought and she said, “Crossy Road is okay, but it is just doing the same thing over and over again. I wish that there was more to it.” And many other people agree with her because all you’re really doing is crossing the road and hopping on logs until you fall in the water, run into a train, are caught by the eagle, or have been run over or smashed by a car.

Given that some people really like Crossy Road, I am not going to give this a bad rating. I will give it three and a half stars because people still like this game and the half is because it won the Apple Design Award.

Minecraft

Most children that I know have heard of the popular game Minecraft. If you haven’t heard of it, Minecraft is a game where you can build almost anything you want out of cubes. Okay, I know what you’re thinking, but once you see it, you will understand. You can go to the Nether, go to The End (on the computer), create worlds, and play with your friends. Minecraft has two modes: Survival or Creative. Survival mode is where you have to make or find the resources yourself, and can die if you don’t eat or run into monsters. Creative mode is where you have all of your resources in front of you and are good to go build whatever you want and can fly but can’t die.

Parents, you are probably thinking that this Minecraft nonsense is only for fun, and how are my kids going to learn from this? Well, what you might be overlooking is that your children are learning some basic math. For instance: How many bricks do I need for that column over there? I know the perimeter, but what is the area of the rectangle that I need to build? And from red sand, gravel, and sand you can learn basic physics. See? Minecraft makes the player ask these types of questions. But, usually children grow out of Minecraft faster than other things. Also, playing it would mean staring at the screen all day, and is that really what you want your child doing? Given that kids enjoy playing it and that it has a math and physics component, I shall give Minecraft a three and a half star rating.
